UEN and the University of Utah select Ciena platform for network
The Utah Education Network (UEN) and the University of Utah (UU) have chosen a platform that will connect the UU with its new data center in Salt Lake City and with other educational and research institutions throughout Utah: Ciena’s 6500 Packet-Optical platform with WaveLogic Coherent Optical Processors. With scalable capacity, the 100G platform will support high-volume, big data research projects such as CI-WATER and other educational activities well into the future.
Steve Corbató, CI-WATER principle investigator and Deputy CIO at the University of Utah says Ciena was selected for two reasons: the company’s experience in research and education technology and its ability to create an optical backbone to support advanced research and innovation.

Student cites SRAP as source for jobs, education pathways and new friendships
“The whole experience in general was a complete blast!” says University of Wyoming (UW) sophomore Leo K. Perez, Jr. of the Summer Research Apprenticeship Program (SRAP). A two-time SRAP participant, Perez found the experience helped prepare him for college and a STEM major in more ways than one.
SRAP brings high school students onto the UW campus to work in research labs, getting to know professors, grad students and peers as they work on projects in a range of science-related fields. In addition to learning about the research process and practicing the time management skills that are crucial to success in college, Perez enjoyed working with a wide range of peers from different backgrounds. “You really get a taste of all different cultures. In Wyoming, you don’t get to experience that too much. Both summers in SRAP we had students from all over the country, so you really meet people from a lot of different backgrounds. I always thought that was pretty cool.”

The deadline for this year’s SRAP applications is March 15th.
