Outreach video shoot at the Natural History Museum of Utah
On Monday, four young scientists assisted the CI-WATER Outreach team with a video shoot at the Natural History Museum of Utah. UEN Media Specialist Katie Garrett filmed Sahana, Paris, Hunter and Mohan holding a model boat and playing with one of the Museum’s most popular exhibits, an interactive model of the Salt Lake Valley. The footage will be part of the CI-WATER explainer video, “What Is A Model?” which is now in production.
“Science is fun when you get to learn new things,” says Paris, 10. “And I like the water table at the Museum because it shows the Bonneville Shoreline and how it used to be.”

Open to researchers, educators, modelers, data publishers and software developers, the conference will include workshops, discussions and keynotes by leaders in the field of hydroinformatics and computer modeling. Participants may register separately for a July 16–17 workshop in building scientific software, facilitated by Software Carpentry.
Travel support is available for eligible participants on a first-come, first-serve basis. CUAHSI, which stands for the Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, is supported by the National Science Foundation.
Register by June 30th.

PD Summer Institute for Teachers starts next week
Next week, Utah and Wyoming teachers of Earth Science and Environmental Science will gather at the University of Utah for the CI-WATER Professional Development Summer Institute. Starting June 24, participants will learn about water science from CI-WATER researchers and collaboratively draft curricula that incorporate water modeling for grades 9–12.
Institute facilitators will include Molly Malone, of the University of Utah’s Genetic Science Learning Center, and Wyoming EPSCoR’s Beth Cable.

Research Experience for Undergraduates Begins
Undergraduate students interested in high performance computing and modeling are gearing up for a month-long research experience at the University of Wyoming (UW), a CI-WATER partner. The Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) begins today and ends July 19. Over the course of four weeks, participants will gain hands-on experience in computational science, learn to work in team research situations and improve programming skills. An optional week-long course on modeling systems will follow REU.
Dr. Fred Ogden, professor of engineering at UW, and Dr. Craig Douglas, professor of mathematics at UW, will lead this year’s REU. REU is sponsored by CI-WATER.
